OUR HISTORY
Founded in 1995 as Interface Testing System by Phillip Barr & partner, HcDat initially focused on certifying machine-to-machine communication interfaces. Evolving into Healthcare Data Solutions (HcDat), our mission shifted towards advancing health standards to enhance patient outcomes and research.HcDat played pivotal roles, including managing the first federal HL7* contract and pioneering HL7 servers for meaningful use standards. We've completed critical systems and research projects for prominent organizations like Emergency Physicians Medical Group, HL7, ONC, and more.We thrive on collaboration, engaging top talent—tech gurus, standards leaders, and security experts—to craft innovative solutions. In a rapidly evolving tech landscape, our extensive network ensures we stay ahead, delivering broad and deep expertise tailored to your needs.*HL7: Global standards facilitate the exchange of clinical and administrative health data to improve patient outcomes and health system efficiency.
A message from Phil & the team
We measure our success by the value we provide to our clients and the communities we serve. An ER doctor friend once shared a story about a disoriented man who had to spend a costly, cold winter night in the emergency room, simply because he lacked a pair of boots and a warm place to sleep. Our healthcare journey takes us to fascinating places: from Data Security and Standardized Messaging to On-Demand Virtual Redundant Database Servers, Population Analytics, and deep into the Genome. It's a complex path, but our goal remains clear—to find the most efficient, low friction way to help those in need, like giving that man a safe place to rest and warm boots.Thank you for allowing us to walk this path with you. We deeply appreciate your dedication to your mission and are grateful for the opportunity to work with such committed partners.

Phil Barr, President and Chief Puzzle Master of HcDat, brings his data modeling expertise to tackle diverse life science, clinical, and public health challenges. Known for his philosophical insights on data interfaces, Phil emphasizes the importance of a single source of truth for data, advocating for standards-based methodologies to ensure data integrity and context. His approach turns raw data into meaningful information, enabling event recording and statistical aggregation for trending and benchmarking. Phil's visionary perspective underscores the narrative nature of data, recognizing that every data element tells a story, whether at a social construct level or down to sub-cellular detail.
Santiago is a senior full stack developer, entrepreneur, and consultant with extensive experience in building web projects that are both visually appealing and high-performing. Known for tackling complex challenges with modern web technologies, Santiago crafts intuitive, maintainable user interfaces supported by robust and modular systems.Their expertise spans both frontend and backend development, with a specialized focus on the healthcare sector, where they handle health data standards like HL7 v2 messages and CCDs. Santiago is adept at translating these data formats into FHIR bundles, visualizing data, and ensuring secure message exchanges to meet compliance standards.Santiago is also skilled in data flow orchestration, utilizing tools such as Apache Airflow and Trino DB to help healthcare organizations index, analyze, and gain insights from critical health and demographic metrics. This supports businesses in leveraging big data for better decision-making.With a strong background in system architecture for B2C and B2B applications, Santiago integrates multiple platforms and services, optimizing processes through advanced AI. They are dedicated to delivering scalable, efficient, and user-centric solutions tailored to project needs.
Here's a high level overview of a recent client project. Of course there is a lot more technical detail to dive into. For this typical recent client, a Health Information Exchange we used Linux based docker images and deployed them in Azure Kubernetes cluster. Services include a wide range of open source and commercial projects in Data engineering and Health industries. We put a lot of effort into security because we view security as the first priority. Penetration tests are conducted in each environment. Databases are created for each service in a separated environment and encrypted at rest and in transit. The Monitoring platform is the key to early detection of suspicious activity, anomalies in performance, crashes and bug tracking.Typically, we both adapt, improve, streamline and secure existing client solution & services, and integrate new services to enhance performance and security. We use the popular solutions in the community, e.g. Prometheus/Grafana.We bring our a deep level of experience to bear to each situation in order to achieve our clients immediate and long-term objectives. We love solving problems, and are here to help.Regards,Hao
